HitOldies Personality Steve West

It’s hard to believe that 2012 marks 32 years playin’ around on the radio! Steve grew up in the small town of Orange, Massachusetts, about 75 miles west of Boston.  He first got into radio in 1980, after his mom suggested that since he loved radio so much maybe he should go down to his local hometown station, WCAT (1390) and apply for a job. After putting the DJ’s records away for a few months, his first show was on Thanksgiving Day, 1980, and thus began his long trek through the halls of radio stations big and small. Perhaps it wasn’t his mother so much as Al Bandiero, whom he listened to on WKBW 1520 at night. From 500 miles away, the pull of this 50,000 watt AM transmitter pumping out Rock music was so strong that it was irresistable.

Over the years he’s done a dozen or so stations, including KOUL Cool 103.5 and KLTG Oldies 96-5 in Corpus Christi. He was PD of little WCAT for about 6 months in 1989. After 13 years in the Navy and several years as a truck driver, Steve was happy to be doing what he loved best full time. He arrived in Memphis in March, 2000 and was picked up for weekends on country WOGY Froggy 94. The format changed to Modern AC and he did nights on the New 94-1 The Buzz (WMBZ) until July 2001.

From 2002 until 2005 Steve was the PM drive News Anchor on the Information Radio Network (IRNUSA Radio News), while also doing news on the Young and Elder morning show on Country WGKX durning the same time period! He also was a Jock at WGKX and sister station WJZN/Smooth Jazz on weekends before moving over to become the night jock on the legendary WMC-FM 100.

These days, when not playing HitOldies, he also hosts another show on CJMQ – Wild Country. Pulling together the experience of over a dozen years in Country radio, Steve now combines the U.S. and Canadian Country chart data to put together one unique New Country Show. Listen to WILD COUNTRY every Tuesday at 6pm on our host station, 88.9 CJMQ.

Steve is also be heard on the Amateur Radio bands. Listen for K1FRC calling CQ and maybe you’ll get a QSL card! He’s been licensed since 1989 and currently holds a general class license.

Steve also owns and maintains one of the most important aircheck sites on the internet: Airchexx.com. You can contact him at his email address by clicking HERE.
